Chairperson of NHRCK visited the International Criminal Court

o Chairperson Lee Sung-ho of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea visited the International Criminal Court and met with President Silvia Fernandez of the ICC on 3 March, 2017, in Hague, Netherlands.

 

 

o During the meeting, Chairperson Lee listened to activities of the ICC conducted to punish perpetrators of crimes against humanity and discussed measures to implement the recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea and UN General Assembly Resolution on North Korean human rights.

 

o At the meeting, Chairperson Lee explained activities of the NHRCK carried out to promote North Korean human rights and conveyed international communitys concern on severity of the issue. Chairperson Lee and President Fernandez talked about expanding jurisdiction of ICC to punish perpetrators of human rights violation at UN level.

 

o In particular, Chairperson Lee emphasized that the COI recommended the UN Security Council to bring North Korean human rights issue to the ICC and the UN General Assembly, through resolutions for the past three years, called for referral of the issue to the ICC as well.

 

o President Silvia Fernandez of the ICC said that the issue of human rights is common concern for both NHRIs and the ICC and by strengthening cooperation among NHRIs, regional human rights courts, and the ICC, promotion of human rights can be pursued.

 

o The meeting served as an opportunity for the ICC to better understand human rights situation in North Korean and agree on the need for international communitys efforts for promotion and protection of human rights.

 

o Meanwhile, Chairperson Lee, before visiting the ICC, also met with President Theodor Meron of the MICT to discuss activities carried out by the ICTR and ICTY.
