NHRCK hosts International Symposium on 

North Korean Human Rights 2021

-Discussions on the ways to improve North Korean human rights and enhancing the rights of North Korean defectors-

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Doohwan Song) hosted the at the International Conference Center on 29 and 30 November 2021.

 

The Commission has been hosting the International Symposium since 2004, in order to strengthen the relationship with domestic and international organizations who are working to improve the rights of North Korean and to for common understanding o the agenda related to North Korean human rights.

 

The Symposium was divided into two sessions and the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, Doohwan Song gave the opening remarks. The congratulatory remarks was made by the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Korea Simon Smith. The ambassadors in Korea and the representatives from different international organizations have also attended the Symposium.

 

On the first day of the Symposium, the panels of session 1 discussed the ways for ‘setting directions to improve National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights(NAP)’. The panels included Geumsun Lee, senior researcher at Korea Institute for National Unification, David Maislish, the Head of the Office of International Committee of the Red Cross Seoul and more.

On the second day of the Symposium, the panels of session 2 discussed the ways for ‘setting directions to promote human rights for North Korean defectors’. The panels include Beomseok Beak, Professor at Kyunghee University, Seokhyang Kim, Professor at Ewha Women’s University and more.

 

The international community has been expressing deep concerns on the exacerbated human rights situations in North Korea and has repeatedly emphasized the importance of promptly resolving human rights issues in the North through such reports and resolutions as ‘Democratic People’s Republic of Korea- Humanitarian Response for COVID19 situation’(Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, FAO), ‘Situation of human rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’(the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea) and the resolution of ‘Situation of human rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’(adopted by the Third Committee of the General Assembly on 17 November)

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea exchanged views on how to improve North Korean human rights and promote the rights of North Korean defectors with the officials from various international organizations including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights(OHCHR) and International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC) at the International Symposium, based on the principle of universality and interconnectivity.
