NHRCK held an open-forum on measures for the UN COI recommendations

o The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson, Hyun Byung-chul), with the Human Liberty Center of Yonsei University(Chairperson, Lee Jung-hoon) and the Committee for the Democratization of North Korea(Chairperson, Hong Soon-kyung), co-hosted an open-forum titled 'measures for implementation of the UN COI recommendations' on 27 August, 2014 at Yonsei University.

 

o During the forum, panelists discussed measures to implement the COI recommendations for improvement of North Korean human rights made to Korea and the international community on March this year.

 

o In response to the COI recommendations, the UN and international community discussed measures to bring perpetrators of North Korean human rights to the International Criminal Court, and a field-based structure is slated to open later this year in Korea.

 

o The NHRCK, during the forum, discussed measures to implement COI recommendations to Korea which include vitalizing inter-Korean communications, people-to-people exchanges as well as social and cultural exchanges, humanitarian aid for North Korea and support for related private organizations.

 

o In addition, future prospect for implementation of the COI recommendations by related countries such as China and the international community was discussed during the forum.

 

o Government officials, private organizations and experts took part in the forum to discuss and present measures for implementation of the COI recommendations. During the opening ceremony, Chairperson Hyun, Byung-chul of the NHRCK, human rights embassador Lee Jung-hoon and other persons interested in North Korean human rights participated.
 

o The NHRCK wishes that the open-forum can serve as an opportunity to raise people's awareness on North Korean human rights issues, and to make more efforts for improvement of human rights in North Korea.
