NHRCK Chairperson Meets with Swedish Ambassador to Korea
On March 25 2021, Swedish Ambassador to Korea Jakob Hallgren paid a courtesy call on Chairperson Young-ae Choi of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea.
The two sides discussed a wide range of human rights issues in Korea, including discrimination against foreign workers and efforts to enact equality law.
Ambassador Hallgren stated the Swedish Embassy’s views about mandatory COVID-19 tests for foreigners. The Chairperson, in return, explained the original purpose of the measures and thanked the Embassy for publicly calling for the abolishment of the mandatory tests, which added greater weight to the Commission’s recommendations concerning the mandatory testing.
Ambassador Hallgren inquired about the progress in the debate taking place at the National Assembly for the introduction of equality law. Chairperson Choi said the Commission intends to step up efforts for the enactment of equality law and asked for the Embassy’s contributions to a conference on equality law which is to be hosted by the Commission in June to learn the experiences of European countries that have already adopted equality law.
