The NHRCK presented it's position on improving human rights in the Republic of Korea.
- The NHRCK concerned that the Government of the Republic of Korea has not accepted some of the recommendations of the international community -
On July 7, 2023, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairman Song Doo-hwan) attended the 53rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, to present the Commission's position on improving human rights in the Republic of Korea.
On January 26, 2023, the UN member states conducted the fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Republic of Korea and recommended a total of 263 human rights improvements for the ROK.
At the 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Government of the Republic of Korea indicated its intention to accept 164 of these recommendations, and the Council adopted the concluding observations of the UPR of the Republic of Korea.
The NHRCK attend this session and expressed concern that the Government of the Republic of Korea had not accepted key recommendations of the international community, including the enactment of a comprehensive anti-discrimination law, the abolition of the death penalty, and improvements to the conscientious objector system, including the scope and duration of alternative service.
The NHRCK also urged the Government to develop specific action plans to fully implement individual recommendations and to take effective follow-up measures.
The NHRCK will continue to communicate and cooperate with the Government and civil society to play a role in ensuring that the UPR recommendations are fully implemented.
