The Chairperson of NHRCK Attended a Conference for Improving the Human Rights in Military Service

Mr. Young-hoang Cho, the Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), attended the army conference which is held at the Mt. Dora Observation Platform near truce the line on June 8, 2006. The Chairperson listened to various opinions regarding human rights for military personnel and human rights improvement measures, and then discussed related matters.

At this conference, attended by people from all walks of life including military personnel and cadets as well as college students and citizens, the Chairperson said in a congratulatory address that he believes guaranteeing human rights in the military service will re-enforce military strength and set up military discipline. He also advised that changes in the military culture and system should be made to secure human rights in the military are based on a reform measure.

NHRCK reported a case study about human rights in the military service on January, 2006. The Commission has monitored the human rights conditions of military personnel and recommended alternative service plan for conscientious objectors.
