Choi Kyoung-Sook Appointed as Standing Commissioner

On September 21, 2007, Choi Kyong-Sook was appointed as one of the Standing Commissioners of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), a notable position in government service.
Newly-appointed Standing Commissioner Choi is one of only a few persons with disabilities in high-ranking government posts. Since 1998, Choi served as executive director of the committee for the establishment of the Busan Differently Abled Women Solidarity and remained actively involved with the Solidarity organization as secretary general and chairperson. Later, Choi served as president of the Sexual Harassment Counseling Center affiliated with Solidarity from 2001 to 2002.
The Commission is honored to welcome Standing Commissioner Choi after a fruitful career. Before coming to the Commission, Choi served as preparation commissioner and executive director for the establishment of the Busan Differently Abled Women Solidarity (1998-2003), president of protective center for the sexually abused victims the Solidarity (2003-2005), and as president of the People’s Solidarity (2004-2006).
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea was established in 2001 to promote human rights education and defend those who have experienced discrimination, or have had a right violated, in Korea. The Commission offers counseling, full investigation and protection for residents, along with educational initiatives for organizations.
