On November 27 and 28, the Commission and Korea Women’s Development Institute, in consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) and the Ministry of Gender Equality (MOGE), co-hosted an international forum on ‘Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)’ with five members of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (hereinafter referred to as the Committee) – Heisoo Shin (Republic of Korea), Dr. Hanna Beate Schöpp-Schilling(Germany), Dorcas Coker-Appiah(Ghana), Pramila Patten(Mauritious), and Regina Tavares da Silva(Portugal).
The international forum focused on; CEDAW and State Responsibility (Dr. Hanna Beate Schöpp-Schilling); Committee’s Review and Recommendations to the Republic of Korea (Dorcas Coker-Appiah); Optional Protocol to the Convention and Individual Complaints (Pramila Patten); Optional Protocol to the Convention and Official Investigation (Regina Tavares da Silva); and CEDAW and NGO Monitoring (Heisoo Shin). BYUN Wha-Soon Researcher of the Korea Women’s Development Institute, LEE Seong-Hoon Director-General of the Human Rights Policy Bureau of the Commission, KIM Sun-Ok professor from Ewha Women’s University, and CHOI Young-Suk Chairperson of the Center for Women’s Human Rights also discussed CEDAW and women’s rights in Korean society. Hopefully, this international forum will enhance the role of the Commission on CEDAW and women’s rights.
