The Commission hosted a ‘Beautiful Chorus of Sports and Human Rights – National Briefing of the Promotion of Human Rights in Sports’ on December 4, 2008. Participants in the briefing, student athletes, parents, and sport leaders, recited the ‘Citizens’ Declaration’ which contains social will to promote human rights in sports.

The Citizen’s Declaration claims that; sports leaders, parents, and civil society should encourage a human rights-based culture in sports; athletes should not have their mental or physical autonomy violated; and sports leaders should be provided systematic and educational support.

Throughout 2008, the Commission has made efforts to promote human rights of student athletes including prevention of physical and sexual violence and guarantee of the right to education by investigating student athletes’ human rights situation, providing human rights education to student athletes, sports leaders, and parents, and providing counseling programs for physically or sexually abused student athletes.
