February 27- The NHRCK expressed an opinion to the Speaker of the National Assembly that the provisions related to wiretapping and checking of communications records should be amended or deleted, after assessing the proposed revisions to the Protection of Communications Secrets Act.
The revisions were submitted to the National Assembly in October 2008, and contain provisions that require telecommunications service providers to have equipment for wiretapping as an obligation, which can violate people’s freedom of privacy and communications.
The Commission further noted that adding location information when checking an individual’s communication records might infringe the person’s privacy. The GPS (Global Positioning System) information, under the proposed revision, allows investigation authorities to track the location of a person within a five-meter radius around the target.
