l July 15- Standing Commissioner Moon Kyong-Ran visited the protective facility for foreigners at Incheon International Airport to grasp the human rights situation of the Immigration Control Law offenders.
In 2007 and 2008, the NHRCK visited protective facilities for foreigners to inspect the conditions of the facilities. The Commission also looked into human rights violations during the procedure of regulating Immigration Control Law offenders. Recommendations were given to improve the human rights situation for immigrants, but not much has been improved yet.
l July 21- Standing Commissioner Yoo Nam-Young visited the “Korean Sharing Movement,” which is the organization for human rights of North Korea. Commissioner Yoo and the Korean Sharing Movement discussed the activities of the NGOs focused on North Korea, the food situation in North Korea, the international attitude treating human rights issues of North Korea, etc.
Meanwhile, the NHRCK invited Professor Kim Cheol of Liaoning University (Social Sciences) to discuss the recent change and the current situation of human rights of North Korea. As China’s role in relation to the issues of North Korea (missile, nuclear weapons, and human rights) has increased, Professor Kim and the NHRCK collected opinions on the relationship between North Korea and China. The Commission also looked into how China’s role impacts the relationship between North and South Korea.
