Memorial Address

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea expresses its deep sorrow at the demise of Korea’s ex-president Kim Dae-Jung.

Kim devoted his life to the promotion of Korea’s democracy and human rights.

Kim’s unfailing faith and will toward human rights laid the groundwork for the establishment of the NHRCK in 2001.

Kim believed that a truly advanced nation is where human rights of the people, in particular the underprivileged, are fully protected. This belief resulted in the establishment of the NHRCK in 2001.

In the courses of the establishment of the NHRCK, Kim emphasized that the NHRCK should be run based on the international standards set forth in various UN conventions and treaties. He stated that this principle was crucial for the NHRCK to be successful as a national human rights institution.

Following Kim’s will, the NHRCK will make every endeavor to cultivate a successful culture of human rights. With our deep sorrow in mind, the NHRCK prays for the repose of President Kim Dae-Jung’s soul.
