NHRCK Organized Bike Campaigns and Seminars on Reducing Discrimination against Persons with Mental Disabilities

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) organized bike campaigns and seminars on reducing stigma towards and discrimination against persons with mental disabilities on October 10-14, 2011, in collaboration with GyeonggiProvince.

 

The event started in SuwonCity, GyeonggiProvinceon October 10, well attended by 60 participants of persons with mental disabilities, their family members and volunteers. The participants toured Daejeon, Jeonju, Gwangju, Haenam and returned to Suwoncity on October 14, covering a total distance of 355.3km by bike.

 

The event aimed to enhance independence and a sense of achievement of persons with mental disabilities through the opportunity to prepare the bike tour, and to reduce social stigma towards mental disabilities through street campaigns in different cities. The campaign slogan was ‘2011 overcoming stigma with a hope of bike pedals’.

 

Furthermore, a seminar was held to discuss local issues related to the rights of persons with mental disabilities in three major cities. It provided a forum for participants to search ways to ensure the rights of persons with mental disabilities.
