The North Korean Human Rights Documentation Center & Archives celebrates the first anniversary

The NHRCK held a ceremony celebrating the first anniversary of the North Korean Human Rights Documentation Center & Archives (hereinafter “Center”) on March 15 2012. The Center was established on the ground of the decision of the Plenary Committee on February 28 2011in order to collect information regarding human rights violation cases offended by the North Korean government and use the data for formulating a better policy to improve human rights situation in North Korea.

 

The Center has received 81 human rights violations cases from 834 people including North Korean defectors, families of abductees in North Koreaand members of separate families during the last year. Many cases illustrate violence, torture, hunger, sexual harassment, forced labor and etc in political prisoner camps or correctional facilities. Also, it was discussed that human rights of war prisoners, abductees and family members of separate families need to be improved. The NHRCK has a plan to publish a casebook embracing all reported incidents in May 2012.

 

The NHRCK will continue to promoting human rights in North Korea, beyond all ideological ideas, by vitalizing the Center more and cooperating with relevant organizations to establish a better policy. Moreover, reported cases will be utilized to publicize the human rights situation in North Koreain the county as well as the international community and to deliver the tragic truth to the descendants after reunification.
