On March 28th, the NHRCK released a statement on the adoption of the resolution by the 22nd UN Human Rights Council’s which called for the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry into the situation of human rights in North Korea.
Chairperson Hyun Byung-Chul of the NHRCK said in the statement that the UNHRC’s adoption of the resolution by consensus is a significant step toward improving North Korea’s human rights and confirms the deep concern of the international community about the human rights situation of North Korea.
The COI will consist of three members, one of whom will be the present Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea. The other two members will be appointed by the President of the Human Rights council. The three members and other staff of the COI will investigate severe human rights violations in North Korea on a one-year mission and submit reports to the United Nations.
The NHRCK expects the COI on North Korea to be an important milestone in addressing human rights issues in North Korea. Toward this end, it will monitor the activities of the COI and spare no efforts to provide necessary assistance and support for its success.
