The National Human Rights Commission of Korea held the Welcoming Ceremony for this year’s “Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination of Disabled Persons Monitoring Group.”
The Group, comprised of 169 people (114 of them are disabled), will monitor how the Act is being implemented nationwide from May to September 2013. Specifically, they will look into whether community centers, medical facilities, and youth centers are easily accessible to people with disabilities and whether such facilities offer services convenient enough for them to use.
The NHRCK set up its first Monitoring Group back in 2009 in an effort to ensure the effective implementation of the「Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination of Disabled Persons, Remedy Against Infringement of their Rights」(Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination of Disabled Persons).
Although the government and disability groups have put into sustained efforts for the effective implantation of the Act since its effectuation in 2008, things have not yet positively changed for the people with disabilities. Therefore, the NHRCK urges efforts to thoroughly monitor the implementation of the Act in order to identify room for improvement.
