The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Hyun Byung-chul), with the Wonju Multicultural Family Support Center, carried out on-site human rights counselling for multi-cultural families on 7 April at MyungRyun Social Welfare Center.

The NHRCK provided counselling on human rights, discrimination, and legal cases, which served as an opportunity for members from multi-cultural families to address human rights issues that they are faced with in local communities.

The NHRCK also provided human rights education for multi-cultural families to promote general understanding on human rights and measures to seek remedy, and displayed diverse books on human rights to promote protection of human rights and human rights sensitivity of local residents.

The number of foreigners staying in Korea increased by 13.2% from last year, reaching 1.7 million, which is more than doubled from 750,000 in 2004. However, due to prejudice and discrimination against them, various social problems continue to occur.

The NHRCK through the counselling identified various human rights issues that members of multi-cultural families are faced with, which will be utilized to devise human rights policies for them.
