Elisabeth Steiner, a judge of the European Court of Human Rights presented a lecture and seminar at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) on December 17 and 18 2007. Both the lecture and seminar were aimed at strengthening the application of international human rights standards in Korea.
The lecture addressed the European Council’s efforts to protect fundamental social rights and focused on the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the European Social Charter. Attended by NHRCK staff and individuals interested in human right issues, the lecture provided an opportunity to renew the understanding of international human rights standards. The seminar held on the following day was a meaningful opportunity for discussion between Judge Steiner and experts in this field. The discussion focused on case studies relating to the collective complaints system under the European Social Charter.
Before the lecture and seminar, Judge Steiner met with the president of the NHRCK and affirmed the commitment to further solidify cooperation between the institutions. The NHRCK will continue to invite international human rights experts in 2008 in order to further seek ways to help advance international human rights standards in Korea.
