The NHRCK hosted an international symposium

on the role and status of data protection authorities

September 9- The NHRCK hosted an international symposium on role and the status of data protection authorities on 30 September 2009.

The conference was hosted in response to the increased need to effectively address the concerns related to protection of personal data and privacy. The violations of personal data rights warrant attention, for they occur increasingly frequently by many different entities in various aspects of society.

In the symposium, Professor Graham Greenleaf from University of New South Wales in Australia, renowned for his authority in the field of personal data and privacy, and Marie Georges, a consultant at Informatics and Liberties in France, discussed the independence and power of data protection authorities, international standards, and cases in Europe and Asia-Pacific region.

Following the presentation of themes, there were discussions about the status and role of data protection authorities. The participants included, among many, Professor Hong-ryul Yum of Soonchunhyang University, Law Professor Lee In-ho from Joongang University and Professor Lee Hyang-woo from Choongbook University.

Through the symposium, the NHRCK hopes to raise public awareness on the issues related to the independence of data protection authorities, share the experiences of such authorities from other countries and integrate their perspectives into the NHRCK experience, and to reconfirm the status and role of the NHRCK as a data protection authority.
