The NHRCK made a decision to conduct an ex officio investigation into the situations of candlelight protests against the resumption of U.S. beef imports.
The NHRCK has decided to start an ex officio investigation under the National Human Rights Commission Act to verify any possible violations of human rights during the suppression of the protests by riot police as many demonstrators were injured.
Since the beginning of the protests in mid-May, the NHRCK has urgently requested the police authorities and demonstrators to respect the freedom of assembly and exercise restraint. The NHRCK has confirmed that a number of participants were injured through draft investigation. About 100 complaints were filed with the NHRCK.
In addition, the Commission has decided to expand its investigation into cases of abuse where formal complaints have not been filed. The main respondents of the ex officio investigation are the police officers who were engaged in the suppression of the protests.
The NHRCK expects the foundation of a peaceful and safe environment for the assembly to be ensured.
