NHRCK Conducts Counseling Tour for Labor Human Rights of Incheon Youths

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) is pushing for ‘human rights protection for children and youths’ as one of its six core strategic tasks for this year.  The NHRCK planned a counseling tour in the judgment that many youths who work part-time are seriously underpaid, even far below minimum wage, and that those who earn minimum wages perform very arduous work.

The NHRCK intends to ascertain in this counseling tour whether the labor of youngsters is being reasonably acknowledged regardless of the reasons they perform part-time duties and whether they are being paid a lawful consideration without suffering any discrimination.  In addition, it plans to provide counseling regarding overall aspects of students’ human rights and seek necessary relief and policy improvement measures.
The counseling tour will be conducted in cooperation with the Youth Labor Human Rights Network, which has carried out labor-related human rights training for youths since its organization in 2004.  The Network comprises human rights training centers, the Korean Teachers and Education Workers’ Union, National Insecure Employment Elimination Coalition, Korean Non-Regular Workers’ Center, etc.
The NHRCK decided to render the counseling services in Bupyeong Park at a major youth event hosted by an important youth organization in Incheon named ‘Tomorrow - Youth Human Rights and Welfare Center Tomorrow’ (Director Sang-Beom Lee).  Over 1,500 students and adults are expected to attend the event.  The NHRCK intends to provide counseling on a full range of human rights issues regarding youth labor and students, focusing on teenagers participating in the event.
