Symposium on Transitional Justice Measures in Germany and Crimes against Humanity in North Korea

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea co-hosted a symposium on Transitional Justice Measures in Germany and Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea with the TJWG and HEKO on 28 July, 2015 at the Korea Press Center.

 

The NHRCK hosted the symposium to highlight aspects of human rights infringements that Germany has experience during the division and subsequent measures and process to address the violations and to provide an opportunity to publicly discuss North Korean human rights.

 

The NHRCK pays great attention to the fact that with opening of the Seoul Office of the UN OHCHR, international and domestic attention on North Korean human rights and the discussion on realization of transitional justice as a universal approach of international community to address North Korean human rights violation is on the rise.

 

The symposium began with welcoming remarks of the Chairperson Hyun Byung-chul of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, and Choo Mi-ae, a member of the National Assembly gave congratulatory remarks.

 

Professor Hong Seungphil, Chair of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention moderated Session 1 of the Symposium during which Charles A. von Denkowski, a doctoral student of the Ruhr-University of Bochum in Germany made presentation under the theme of the Structures and Legacies of Police Abuses during the Nazi and East German Periods: Promising Approaches for North Korea in Transition, and Sang-bong Park, Head of German Reunification Research Institute, participated the subsequent discussion.

 

Director General Sangdon Shim of the Policy, Education & International Affairs of the NHRCK moderated the Session 2 during which Senior Research Fellow Gi-woong Son of the Korea Institute for National Unification made presentation and Jeong-woo Koo, Associate Professor of Sociology at Sungkyunkwan University participated the subsequent discussion.
