The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Lee Sungho) signed an MOU with the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education(DMOE) in a bid to create a human rights-friendly school environment and enhance cooperation among the two institutions.

The NHRCK and the DMOE will continue to cooperate with each other in a bid to create a school environment that respects human rights.

There are growing and diverse voices calling for protection of human rights of both students and teachers with enactment of ordinances of local governments.

The NHRCK believes that students, teachers and parents should work together to address such issues and a human rights friendly school environment should be established.

Against this backdrop, the NRHCK in August, 2012, made policy recommendations to the Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Science, and Technology and 17 related bodies after deciding on the Comprehensive Measures to Create a Human Rights Friendly School Environment.

In addition, the NHRCK, with an aim to establish a school environment that respects human rights, signed an MOU with offices of educations in Daegu, Seoul, Gwangju and Gangwon Province.

The NHRCK believes that the education office should lead the effort to enhance human rights sensitivity and awareness and hopes that signing of the MOU serves as an opportunity for the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education to play a pivotal role in creating human rights friendly school environment and to enhance human rights awareness in the region.
