NHRCK Chairperson Discusses Adoption Issues with Korean-Danish Adoptee Filmmaker

On May 24, Chairperson Young-ae Choi had a meeting with Danish filmmaker Sun Hee Engelstoft to discuss the rights of unwed mothers who have to decide whether to give up their children for adoption and the Commission’s recommendations concerning the rights of single parents. Director Shin was adopted to Denmark months after she was born and visited Korea in 2004 in search of her birth parents. Her film “Forget Me Not” explores the experiences of three unwed mothers who have to decide whether to keep their babies. The film is set to be released in theaters on June 3.

Chairperson Choi described the realities of Korea where unmarried mothers are forced to give up their children for adoption and the recommendations concerning the rights to education and to take prenatal and postnatal leave of unmarried adolescent mothers issued by the Commission in 2009 and 2019 respectively.

The Commission is planning to organize a roundtable discussion with a focus on the strengthening a public adoption system and post-adoption service.
