NHRCK to host <2024 Human Rights Management Forum> on digital technology and human rights management
- Discussion on Managing Human Rights Risks in the Data Economy Driven by Advancements in Digital Technology -
□ The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK, Chairperson: Ahn Changho) hosted the 2024 Human Rights Management Forum on November 5, 2024 (Tuesday) as a breakout session during the 2024 Korea Leaders Summit at Conrad Seoul in Seoul.
□ The forum was organized in response to the increasing importance of managing human rights risks in the data economy amid advancements in digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), social media, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT). It aimed to explore trends in the intersection of digital technology and human rights, share examples of human rights due diligence by tech companies, and discuss strategies to address related challenges.
□ The forum began with a congratulatory address by Ahn Changho, Chairperson of the NHRCK, as part of the 2024 Korea Leaders Summit, followed by a welcome speech by Ri Seokjun, Director General of Policy and Education at the NHRCK. Key presentations included: V?ra Jourová, Vice-President of the European Commission, on “Global Trends in Digital Technology and Human Rights: Implications for Korean Businesses”, followed by Song Se-ryeon, Chair of the Human Rights Management Forum and Professor at Kyung Hee University Law School, on “Protecting Human Rights in the Data Economy Era: International Trends and Korea’s Response”
A panel discussion on corporate efforts and strategies for managing human rights risks in digital technologies, including AI, followed, moderated by Lim Yong, Professor at Seoul National University Law School.
□ The NHRCK emphasized the importance of incorporating human rights considerations into the use of evolving digital technologies. By fostering dialogue with related organizations, companies, and initiatives such as the UN Global Compact, the Commission will continue discussions on legal and policy measures related to human rights management in the digital era.
