NHRCK Chairperson's statement on the situation
in Ukraine
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson
Doohwan Song) hereby releases a statement, expressing its deepest concerns to
the human rights crisis unfolding in Ukraine due to the Russia-Ukraine
tensions.
The number of civilian casualties,
including children, is escalating in Ukraine and many Ukrainian citizens have
already lost their homes and became refugees. The international community is
calling on Russia to comply with international humanitarian law and
international human rights law and the UN Human Rights Council adopted the
resolution to establish an independent international commission of inquiry to
investigate the human rights violation in Ukraine.
The Global Alliance of National Human
Rights Institutions(GANHRI), as the representative of the global national human
rights institutions, released a statement calling for the protection on
Ukrainian citizens, the end on the armed clash and the normalization of the
national human rights institution in Ukraine.
The NHRCK stands in solidarity with GANHRI
in releasing the statement regarding the situation in Ukraine. The Commission
also vows to provide any necessary assistance in normalizing the Ukrainian
human rights institutions with the international community.
The NHRCK also welcomes the Korean
Government’s decision to support the adoption of the UN Human Rights Council resolution
calling for the resolve in Ukrainian crisis. The Commission hopes the
Government of the Republic of Korea actively participates in the international
measures to protect the rights of Ukrainian refugees and the civilians affected
by the crisis and provided humanitarian assistance as the member of the UN
Human Rights Council.
The National Human Rights Commission of
Korea will continue to provide assistance on the efforts made by the
international community to overcome the human rights crisis in Ukraine.
