NHRCK Chairperson meets the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

 

- Exchanged views on improving human rights situation in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(North Korea) and sought for opportunities for cooperation -

 

Chairperson Doohwan Song of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea met with Elizabeth Silvia Salmon Gárate, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(hereinafter the ‘Special Rapporteur’) on 30 August at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea’s Seoul office.

 

Meeting the Special Rapporteur, Chairperson Song emphasized the importance of cooperation among the states and institutions to improve human rights situation in North Korea and exchanged views on ways to make positive changes to North Korean human rights. Chairperson Song also requested that the Special Rapporteur pay special attention to the issues of the servicemembers and civilians who were abducted from the Republic of Korea during and after the Korean War and the separated families of the two Koreas.

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea will continue to cooperate with the Special Rapporteur to improve the rights of the people in North Korea.

 

The position of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was first established in 2004, upon the adoption of the UN Human Rights Council resolution. The Special Rapporteur is mandated to investigate and research human rights situation in North Korea and report to the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council on a regular basis. Elizabeth Silvia Salmon Gárate, the newly-appointed Special Rapporteur, is a Peruvian expert in international law and began her work as the Special Rapporteur as of 1 August 2022.
