National Human Rights Commission of Korea had a briefing session to present the result of monitoring activities to guarantee the minimum wage of and protect the dignified home for migrant workers. The session was held in order to raise people’s awareness on the situation of migrant workers and seek improvement measures based on the fact-finding research conducted on 1400 migrant workers.

At session 1, the result of survey conducted from April to October was presented. The survey included working condition, living environment, minimum wage, types and conditions of accommodations, exception of expenditure on accommodations and its amounts, and the costs and quality of meals provided during work hours. Pictures of workplace and accommodation taken by migrant workers were presented as well.

At Session2, discussions and policy proposals were made based on the result of the survey. The discussion, in particular, dealt with differential application of minimum wage to migrant workers, in violation of domestics laws including Article 6 of the Labor Standards Act and international treaties, and improvement measures.
