NHRCK holds the 21st ‘Korean Human Rights Education Forum’

- ‘Revised Common Curriculum of 2022 and Human Rights’-

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Doohwan Song, hereinafter the ‘NHRCK’ or the ‘Commission’) held the 21st ‘Korean Human Rights Education Forum’(hereinafter the ‘Forum’) on 29 June 2022, with the theme of ‘revised common curriculum of 2022 and human rights’.

The Forum was held to seek for ideas on how to carry out systematic and active human rights education in schools and to find ways to incorporate those ideas into practice. The moderator for the Forum was Junghwa Koo, Professor at Gyeongin National University of Education. Three main topics were presented, followed by discussions.

The first topic was on the ‘reasons human rights education has to be included in the common curriculum’. Teachers in primary, middle and high school presented their examples of human rights education in schools, the difficulties faced in teaching the concept of human rights and ways to apply revised curriculum of 2022 in which systematic human rights education is possible.

The second topic was on the ‘application of human rights education in class’. Middle school teachers teaching Korean and Science and high school teachers teaching English and Social Studies analyzed the achievement criteria of each subject and the guideline for teaching and learning, and provided specifics on how to combine human rights concept into these criteria. The teachers then presented the positive effects on combining in-class learning and human rights.

The third topic was on the ‘human rights-centric curriculum and the guidelines in schools’. Civil society organization and the academia presented the ways to apply human rights perspective in specific guidelines, mainly focusing on the idea of ‘providing fair education opportunity for all’.

At the discussion session, the three topics were summarized and the ways to incorporate the ideas into policies were further discussed.

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has established the Commission on Korean Human Rights Education Forum, with 32 members including professors, experts, administrators, teachers, activists and journalists, in order to host the Forum. The NHRCK plans to continue the discussion on the application of systematic and active human rights education in school curriculum through holding additional forums.
