NHRCK holds the ‘International Conference 

on North Korean Human Rights’

 

- Chairperson Song emphasized the importance of making continuous effort towards improving North Korea human rights -

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Doohwan Song) co-hosted the ‘2022 International Conference on North Korean Human Rights’ with the ‘All-Party Parliamentary Group on North Korea(APPG on North Korea)’ and the ‘Korea Future’ at Portcullis House, the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

 

The International Conference began with opening remarks and was divided into three sessions: ‘Freedom of Religion or Belief in North Korea’, ‘Key Challenges of Human Rights in North Korea’ and ‘Ways to Improve Human Rights in North Korea’

 

Doohwan Song, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea and Ms Fiona Bruce, the British Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, delivered the opening remarks. The 3 sessions followed, with moderators including Lord Alton of Liverpool, the Co-chair of the ‘All Parliamentary Group on North Korea’. The Conference was the venue for North Korean Human Rights experts in the Britain and the Europe to discuss the on-goings in North Korea in relation to human rights and the ways to improve the situations.

 

In the opening remarks, Chairperson Song emphasized that collective effort has to be made by the international community, even in the midst of tensions at the domestic and international level, as North Korea continues its nuclear and ICBM testings.

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has been co-hosting the ‘International Conference on North Korean Human Rights’ with international human rights organizations, human rights groups and experts to raise awareness on North Korean human rights and to seek for ways to improve the situation in the North. The Commission will continue to do its part in making positive progress in North Korean human rights through the coordination with the international community.
