NHRCK Offers Training Course for Local Council Members on the Rights of Care Workers
- 15 local council members attended training course held 29-30 October-

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Young-ae Choi) offered a training course for local council members which was designed to improve the capacity of local government in protecting labor rights of care workers at the Vabien Training Center in Seoul from 29 to 30 of October.

Despite the trend towards non-face-to-face communication amid the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, care services for older persons, children and persons with disabilities should be delivered in person. Unfortunately, unfavorable wages, compensation and working conditions of care workers lead to a high turnover rate and a shortage of care workers and services. This highlights the importance of providing care services in local communities and strengthening supervision of local governments.

The training was attended by 15 members and one public official from local councils of Gyeonggi Province, South Gyeongsang Province, North Gyeongsang Province, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Seoul Metropolitan City and North Jeolla Province, who gathered to discuss a range of topics, including working conditions of care workers and measures to promote their rights, and to establish sustainable care service system and roles that local governments and council members can play in the process.
