The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Young-ae Choi) will co-host the 2020 Conference on Combating Hate and Discrimination, jointly with the European Union and the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions. The conference will be held on 17 September 2020 at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul.

The conference was organized to emphasize the necessity of introducing equality law as an effective tool for addressing the risk of socially disadvantaged groups being exposed to hatred and discrimination amid the global spread of COVID-19 and to promote national and international solidarity which will provide additional momentum for its adoption.

The conference will open with welcoming remarks by Chairperson Young-ae Choi and congratulatory remarks by EU Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore. This will be followed by keynote speeches of Maria Westergren, Political Affairs Officer of the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, Louisa Klingvall, Policy Officer of the Fundamental Rights Unit of the European Commission Directorate-Generate for Justice and Consumers and Moonja Jeong, Standing Human Rights Commissioner of the NHRCK. The keynote speakers will address existing measures and additional steps necessary for addressing hatred and discrimination.

The conference consists of three sessions. Each session has one moderator and 4-5 speakers. The first session focuses on implementation of international human rights standards and existing policy measures relating to hate and discrimination. The second session addresses progress and challenges in introducing equality law as a tool for tackling hate and discrimination. The last session deals with measures against hate speech on social media and the Internet.

Based on the outcome of discussions, participants will release an oral statement at the closing ceremony, which reaffirms the importance of upholding the human dignity and fundamental human rights, calls for joint action to tackle hate and discrimination and expresses support for the NHRCK’s work to introduce equality law in Korea.

The conference will be held virtually in accordance with the COVID-19 control measures of the health authorities. It will be streamed live on the Commission’s YouTube channel. Please visit the NHRCK’s website (www.humanrights.go.kr) for further information.
