NHRCK Chairperson Meets with Comfort Woman Survivor to Discuss Referral of Case to UN Top Court

Chairperson Young-ae Choi of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea met with Yong-soo Lee, a survivor of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery, to discuss the attempts to bring the issue to the International Court of Justice.

Yong-soo Lee said Japan refused to participate in the lawsuit filed by the comfort women survivor, citing state immunity, and rejected the Korean court’s decision to pay compensation to the victims. Lee explained Japan’s refusal to follow the court’s order has driven her and the remaining survivors to bring the case to the UN’s highest court. At the meeting, Lee asked for the Commission’s cooperation on this matter, including through issuing a statement or an opinion in support of the victims.
