Chairperson of NHRCK visited Equitas

Chaireprson Lee Sungho of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea made an official visit to the Equitas in Canada, the biggest human rights education institution.

 

Chairperson Lee met with Chair Andre Beaulieu and Executive Director Ian Hamilton and discussed issues related to enactment of a human rights education act and establishment of a human rights education center. In addition, they agreed to proceed with signing an MOU between the two institutions in order to share ideas on human rights education program, operation of online human rights education courses and support for human rights education instructors.

 

Chairperson Lee emphasized that human rights education would enhance peoples awareness on human rights and prevent human rights infringements or discrimination, thereby contributing to social inclusion. He added that cooperation between the two institutions would serve as an opportunity to enhance human rights situation not only in the two countries but also in Asia and the world.

 

The purpose of the visit was to discuss various issues including enactment of a human rights education act, establishment of a human rights education center and measures for cooperation for the two institutions.

 

Along with the visit to the Equitas, Chairperson Lee met with the Chairperson of the Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission, Ombudsman and Minister of international affairs to discuss human rights protection system under local governments.

 

He also visited the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal to discuss establishment of a human rights tribunal in Korea and the role and function of the Commission in this regards.
