o National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted International Seminar on the Death Penalty in cooperation with the International Commission against the Death Penalty, Joint Meeting of Religion, Human Rights, and Civil Organizations for Abolition of the Death Penalty, and Office of Congressman Keum Tae-sup.

o The seminar was organized in order to identify global trend on the death penalty, share experiences of abolitionist countries and discuss current trend in Korea and possibility of introduction of alternative punishments.

o Korea is a de facto abolitionist country as there has been no execution of the death penalty for the last 20 years since December 30, 1997. It is meaningful that diverse stakeholders gathered together to seek for measures to abolish the death penalty in Korea.

o Commissioner Ivan Simonovic of the International Commission against the Death Penalty opened the seminar with his keynote speech on international trend on the death penalty. It was followed by three thematic presentations: controversy over abolition of the death penalty and its alternatives; experience of Australia on abolition of the death penalty; and current situation and introduction of alternative punishment in Korea. At the discussion, experts from diverse fields including the adviser from Amnesty International, Lawyers for a Democratic Society, Ministry of Justice and NHRCK.
