The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Young-ae Choi) has been conducting an on-the-ground investigation into the human rights situation in sports since July 2020 to examine in detail human rights awareness of athletes and coaches, the current training environment and human rights violations that may have occurred.

To conduct a first-hand investigation, NHRCK investigators visit the training venues of school athletic teams, sports clubs and workplace sports teams and have a one-on-one interview with athletes and coaches to better understand human rights abuses committed in the sports community and different patterns of human rights violations in each sport.

The interview subjects will be selected randomly from each sports category (gymnastics/track and field, water sports, ball games, others). Former athletes who changed their careers as well as coaches and parents of athletes will be interviewed.

Meanwhile, NHRCK Chairperson Young-ae Choi is scheduled to meet with basketball team members of Soongeui Girls’ Middle School on August 6, where the on-site investigation is underway.

Based on the findings of the investigation by the special task force on human rights in sports, the NHRCK will issue recommendations to relevant agencies on corrective measures and provide a forum for discussion to achieve a paradigm shift in sports in an effort to protect and promote human rights in the field of sports.
