Chairperson of NHRCK met with Director of DCAF

o Chairperson Lee Sung-Ho of NHRCK had an official meeting with Director Thomas Guerber of the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces(DCAF) and discussed diverse human rights issues including human rights in military and introduction of Military Ombudsman.
o Director Geurber said the he supports Korean government’s decision to establish the Military Ombudsman under NHRCK, and added the he hope that Korea would be able to guarantee human rights of soldiers to the level higher than that of international human rights instrument.
o Chairperson Lee said that with regards to establishment of the Military Ombudsman, the NHRCK decided on the draft legislation at the Plenary Committee which will be submitted to the National Assembly after going through the cabinet meeting. He added that he expects the Military Ombudsman be able to perform its role at earliest date possible with prompt deliberation at the National Assembly.
o Meanwhile, Chairperson Lee and Director Guerber also discussed about attending the International Conference of Ombuds Institutions for Armed Forces and measures for cooperation in regards to establishment and operation of Military Ombudsman.
