NHRCK hosted a debate on Me-too Movement

National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted a debate on Me-too movement in order to identify the root cause of sexual violence and gender discrimination and policy alternatives to address the issue.

 

As part of a series of debate, this debate was held under the title of United with Me-too Movement. During the debate, gender violence and hatred against women and the significance of the Me-too movement were reviewed, and how sexual harassment and violence is happening at work and in media was discussed.

 

 

During the debate, Director Lee Mikeyong of Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center emphasized that the gender violence that surfaced by the Me-too movement is nothing new to women. She added that violence and discrimination against women that are still not surfaced has to be identified and measures to address this issue have to be devised. She also talked about the issues of legal accountability including secondary damage and false charge.

 

Professor Shin Kyeonga presented under the title of hierarchical organizational culture and sexual violence at work place and emphasized that sexual violence at work place is discrimination based on gender and violation of equal treatment. She also added that the more the organization allows patriarchal culture and hierarch, the more gender discrimination and sexual violence occur.

 

Professor Hong Jia of Kyunghee University proposed a question regarding the point of view and stance of media in dealing with sexual harassment and violence through her presentation titled how the media describes sexual violence?

 

Professor Kim Sua of Faculty of Liberal Education of Seoul National University presented under the title of looking at the Me-too movement through hatred against women and spoke about hatred against women online as part of discriminatory culture against women.
