The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson, Lee Sungho) hosted a forum on enhancing implementation of the UN CRC on 4 of December.

In 2015, the Commission took over from the Ministry of Health and Welfare the project to monitor human rights situation of children. As part of the project, the Commission hosted the forum to review implementation status of the CRC and seek measures to address challenges.

The UN CRC is the most important and essential international human rights treaty that prescribes in detail human rights of children. Since its adoption in 1989, 196 nations joined the Convention. Korea ratified the Convention in 1991 and receives 4 times of deliberation on state report.

During the forum, meanings and implementation status of 42 provisions of the Convention were reviewed and discussed.

The Commission wishes that the forum serves as an opportunity to initiate consideration and deliberation on the principle of best interest of children. The Commission will continue to devote its best efforts to enhance domestic implementation of the CRC based on opinions and policy implications proposed at the forum.
