NHRCK celebrates the 67th anniversary of the UDHR

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Lee Sungho) hosted a commemorative event on 10 December 2015 to celebrate the 67th anniversary of adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on December 10, 1948 as a universal standard applied to every individual and state for realization of human dignity and value. The NHRCK hosts commemorative event every year in order to remember the noble meaning and spirit of the UDHR.  

During this year's event, the 2015 Human Rights Awards were given to individuals and groups for their dedication for promotion and protection of human rights, followed by commemorative performance, recital of the UDHR, and PR video of the NHRCK.

 The 2015 Korea Human Rights Awards were given to 12 individuals and 3 groups.

 The Human Rights Order was given to Ms. Kim Bok-dong, who herself is a victim of the 'comfort women', for her dedication to address the issue and to restore human rights of victims of sexual violence during war, in spite of diverse difficulties and great age. The Civil Merit Medal was given to Ms. Jung Chun-sook from the Korea Women’s Hot Line for her efforts to enact the act on prevention of domestic violence, bring about economic empowerment of women including joint ownership, promote gender equality and eradicate violence against women,

In addition, 10 individuals including Mr. Satoshi Murayama, an activist from the Kanagawa City Union and 3 groups including Know Your Rights from Australia were given Citation of Chairperson.  

Chairperson Lee Sungho stated in his congratulatory remarks that UDHR remains relevant today and human rights is creature of time that continues to evolve. In that regards, in front of all of us lies an endless journey.  

He also mentioned that all the diverse challenges that we are faced with can be resolved only when all of us devote our efforts together to fully realize the spirit of the UDHR. He added that the NHRCK, as a helping hand to the socially underprivileged people and minorities and as a light to enlighten our society, will remain committed to fulfill the mandates that were given since the time of its establishment.  

The NHRCK would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude and respect to everyone around the world who devoted their best efforts for promotion and protection of human rights. We also wish that today's event serve as an opportunity for all of us to remind the noble meaning of the UDHR.
