The NHRCK presented a written submission to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) on April 18 as a part of the Second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on the Republic of Korea. The report contains monitoring outcomes regarding the implementation of recommendations from the last UPR session to the Government.

UPR is one of UN mechanisms through which the HRC regularly reviews human rights situation in every UN Member States to make recommendations. In the case of the Republic of Korea, the Government received 33 recommendations at the first UPR session in 2008. The second cycle of UPR will be undertaken from June 2012 until December 2016, for 4 years and 6 months. The Republic of Korea will be reviewed in October 2012 in relation to the implementation of recommendations from the last session.

In this regard, the NHRCK produced an independent report on the progress, limitation and problems regarding the implementation of first UPR recommendations and key human rights issues in the society, which is attached in the article.

The HRC calls upon governments to hold a consultation with NHRIs and civil society during preparation process of a national report, apart from Stakeholder’s independent report which the NHRCK submitted. Thus, the NHRCK will continuously remain engaged with the production of the national report as well.
