The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) held a forum on < Strategies and challenges for implementing CEDAW’s recommendations in legislative and judicial sector> on 19 September 2012.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women is an international agreement on women’s rights which was formulated in 1979 and the Republic of Korea (ROK) acceded in 1984. The Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) monitors the overall situation in relation to women’s rights in the signatory state and recommends corrective measures for the improvement of women’s rights. ROK was reviewed at the 49th session on 19 July 2011 based on the 7th Report. As a result, CEDAW adopted 49 recommendations on ROK.

Adopted recommendations include positive feedback on measures that ROK took for fulfillment of obligations imposed by the Convention and the elimination of discrimination against women. Furthermore, concerns and recommendations on each sector and subject were raised as well which demand legislative and judicial measures.

NHRCK wishes this conference serves as a momentum to establish a joint monitoring system for the implementation of CEDAW’s recommendations which the legislative branch and the judicial branches participate in.
