The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) conducted a campaign for the elimination of discrimination and prejudice against persons with mental disability at Daehakro on 24 November 2012 in cooperation with the Korean Alliance on Mental Illness (KAMI).
In order to improve human rights of persons with mental disability, abolishing society’s prejudices against persons with mental disability is top priority along with the institutional reform. Problems related to human rights violations against them are consistently brought up, however, due to prolonged society’s prejudices, discrimination against them still exists which blocks their attempt to job hunt, obtain any kind of license, and purchase private insurance and etc.
Since the NHRCK believes that those problems are originated from wrong perception against persons with mental disability, such campaign was planned and conducted. The slogan of the campaign reads that “KAMI WALK’s with NHRCK, a World where People Walk Together is Beautiful”. The event was participated by 150 people including persons with mental disability and their families, and volunteers so as to improve society’s awareness of mental disability.
At the campaign, many activities were carried out such as street events, flash-mob show by students at Daegu University who are members of Community Mental Health Volunteers, open mic for the public, on-site survey on mental disability.
