The NHRC to join Asia Pacific Forum (11-7-2002)


The National Human Rights Commission  is set to become a member of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions. The president of NHRC, Kim Chang-Kuk, Secretary General Choi Young-Ae, and Commissioner Kim Duck-Hyun will leave for New Delhi, India, where the APF"s seventh annual meeting will be held from Nov. 11 to Nov. 13.


The APF is based on the UN Paris Principle and its members are the Asia Pacific Organizations of National Human Rights Institutions. The National Human Rights Commissions from 9 countries belong to the APF as full members. During this meeting,
South Korea will join the APF, along with Thailand and Malaysia, after their qualifications as applicants were examined.


The APF membership is given to human rights organizations that are proven to be independent of the jurisdiction of administrative, legislative and judicial branches of the government, and guaranteed by the Constitution and Act involved.

 

The candidate also must be pluralistic, authorized, and effective in its functions when investigating complaints.

 

Also, this convention is scheduled for discussions human trafficking, especially that of children and women, and also a pact on rights for people who are handicapped that was proposed by the United Nations.
