International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Memorial Ceremony

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea is honored to announce that it will be holding a Memorial Ceremony commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21, 2008 at the Seoul Plaza. The purpose of the Memorial Ceremony is to raise public awareness on the importance of the elimination of racial discrimination in Korea.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21. On this day in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws” in Sharpeville, South Africa. Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
The Ceremony will begin at 12:00 noon, during which the Chairperson of the NHRCK, Mr. Kyong-Whan Ahn, the Charge d’affaires a.i. of the South African Embassy, Ms. Feziwe Madikizela, the Head of the Korean Office of the UNHCR, Ms. Janice Lyn Marshall, and representatives from Chinese emigrants, migrant workers and asylum seekers in Korea will offer greetings and congratulatory remarks. The Ceremony will be followed by distribution of leaflets on the elimination of racial discrimination to the general public from 12:30 to 1:30pm.
