NHRCK Hosts 2020 Conference on the Rights of the Child

- Conference streamed live via NHRCK’s YouTube Channel on 23-25 November-

 

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Young-ae Choi) hosted the 2020 Conference on the Rights of the Child on 23-25 November to report on and discuss the overall human rights situation of children and adolescents.

 

The Commission has been organizing the conference every November since 2017 to mark World Children’s Day. The conference, which provides a platform for discussion of children’s rights, allows participants to discuss monitoring outcomes of domestic compliance of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as current challenges facing our society and to raise public awareness about children’s rights. 

 

The topics covered at this year’s conference include: the impact of COVID-19 on the rights of the child and challenges ahead; prevention of child abuse; and measures to make children’s voices heard.

 

The Conference opened at 10:00 am on 23 November with a session on the safety of children in social disasters, where the National Human Rights Commission of Korea and Korea Council of Children’s Organization shared the outcome of monitoring children’s rights protection during the COVID-19 pandemic. The session that began at 2:00 pm was about child care during the pandemic situation. The following session dealt with public system for the prevention of child abuse and protection of children and examined the role of local communities in reinforcing public child abuse prevention mechanism.

 

On the second day of the conference, the Center for Cultural Society presented the findings of a study on the current human rights situation of children and adolescents employed in the entertainment industry. The next session focused on labor rights protection for adolescents. Professor Myeong-seon Chang of Ewha Women’s University shared the results of her research about the protection of youth workers’ rights and discussed how to create a labor market environment that respects the rights of younger people. In the first session of the afternoon, Professor Ok-kyeong Hwang of Seoul Theological University presented the outcome of her research on the criteria of emotional abuse or neglect of children to explore the possibility of establishing a standard that reflects local conditions. The following session, which covered the topic of children’s right to express their opinion, consisted of the presentation on the outcome of policy monitoring by children’s rights experts and discussions with children on their right to voice their views.

 

On the third day of the conference, participants exchanged their views about the way forward and challenges in realizing children’s rights in the post-COVID19 era and how to respond to human rights challenges made apparent by the pandemic such as child care, abuse, education and health.

 

The conference was held virtually to contain the spared of COVID-19 and streamed live via the Commission’s YouTube channel.
