NHRI Coalition Responds to NHRCK’s Call for Action to Restore Democracy in Myanmar
-APF Chairperson releases a statement condemning the actions of the Myanmar military-

The Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions(APF, Chairperson Rosalind Croucher of the Australian Human Rights Commission) released a statement on May 10 regarding the situation in Myanmar. The statement condemns the military takeover and expresses concern about the deaths and imprisonment resulting from the ongoing violence, while calling on the military to cease all forms of violence against civilians and release all political prisoners, abide by the five-point consensus plan from the ASEAN Summit urging an end to the violence in Myanmar and normalize the operations of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC).

So far, more than 765 civilian protesters have died and at least 3,500 people have been imprisoned in Myanmar due to the violence committed by the military. Unfortunately, the MNHRC is not able to credibly fulfill its mandates of protecting and promoting human rights in accordance with the Paris Principles.

The APF Chairperson noted that the MNHRC should be allowed to perform its roles without fear of reprisals and that the APF is committed to providing support to assist the Commission to faithfully deliver on its mandates with a heightened level of independence in a state of emergency.

The APF Chairperson issued a statement in response to the letter dated March 18 from Chairperson Young-ae Choi of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), who also serves as APF Deputy Chair, calling for strong action by the NHRI coalition on the situation in Myanmar. Subsequently, at the APF Governance Committee meeting on April 27, Chairperson Choi called for an international action on the situation in Myanmar and highlighted the fact that Korea benefited greatly from the support it received from the international community during the May 18 Democratization Movement in 1980. The Chairperson called on the international community to stand in solidarity and support for the people of Myanmar this time and raise their voices for a return to democracy and an end to human rights violations against the people.

The NHRCK will continue to assist the MNHRC in performing its mandated functions in collaboration with the APF and other international organizations and provide the support necessary for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.
