o National Human Rights Commission of Korea carried out human rights counseling tour in Jeju Island in order to identify the situation that the Yemeni Refugee applicants are faced with and seek improvement measures. .

o The counselling was provided to 144 Yemeni Refugee applicants in cooperation with the Jeju Migrant Center and Commission of Measures for Jeju Yemeni Refugee at Jeju Migrant Centers, shelters and residents.

o Most of the respondents said that getting a job to stabilize their livelihood is the most urgent need. Medical assistance for gun-shot wound, and severe diabetes, and a measure for overdue wage pay were requested as well.

o All of respondents spoke with one voice that getting a job is the most urgent issue. Most of the jobs provided were short-term work that lasts for less than five days and in many cases they voluntarily left the job or were fired by employers. That was because of the intensity of labor, and different language and culture. Hence, it was pointed out that providing an education to understand Korean culture including Korean language is urgent.

o In addition, a system has to be devised to help the refugee applicant to receive overdue wages.

o Most of the respondents expressed their gratitude to local resident who warmly provided shelters, jobs, and food. They also hoped to contribute to Korean society after being recognized as a refugee.

o NHRCK will make effort to incorporate result of the counseling into the inter-department consultation and government policies, and hopes for the government and Jeju Island to provide emergency life assistance to refugee applicants for the next two to three months at least when the refugee application screening will be proceeded.
