NHRCK determined to launch a suo-moto investigation into the practices of National Police College (NPC) and Armed Forces Nursing Academy (AFNA), which have discriminated against applicants based on their marital status, physical condition and gender.
While plenty of efforts have been made for the abolition of gender discrimination, some institutions have maintained discriminative practices. According to NPC" s 2006 new student guideline, all applicants must be single; taller than 167 cm for a male student, 157cm for a female student; weigh at least 55 kg for a male student, 47kg for a female student; have 0.2 or above vision with the naked eye; not be color blind or color weak; and not be unsightly (no moles, scar and abnormal figure). It also states that the number of female students should not exceed 10% of total students accepted. AFNA also states in its 2006 new student guideline that it would only accept single female applicants who are 157-183 cm tall and weigh 45-72 kg.
NHRCK contended that NPC and AFNA should not discriminate against their applicants based on gender, marital status and physical appearance and condition in that the graduates of the two institutions would become high-ranking officials.
The Commission also asserted that gender bias in certain occupation should be eliminated and there should be more women officials within the police.
