Ministry of Justice Responds to NHRC Report with Pledge to Fully Protect the Human Rights of Migrants

On the authority of article 36 of the National Human Rights Commission Act, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has decided to carry out a field survey of the actual conditions faced by migrant workers at Hwaseong Immigration Processing Center on November 19th, at Myeongdong Cathedral and the Anglican Cathedral on November 20th. The decision follows a complaint citing concerns that undocumented migrants awaiting deportation may be detained in overcrowded immigration processing centers with danger of human rights infringements because although the Ministry of Justice, in anticipation of introducing the employment permit system, is in the process of seeking out and cracking down on undocumented migrant workers in Korea, there are not enough facilities in Korea for detaining all the undocumented migrant workers apprehended during the crackdown.
